Gift of Life Update

The Medical University of South Carolina Childrens Hospital and the Rotary Gift of Life have arranged for life saving cardiac care for Kate Odileys Gomez Duran and Kelly Janeth Gomez Duran, from Panama to come to Charleston Monday, Dec. 3 along with their parents, Jackeline Edith Duran Arjona & Juan Miguel Gomez Gomez.

Kate and Kelly are their only children, identical twins with identical heart problems. Both girls may be partially deaf as a result of misdiagnoses of their heart condition at birth. Kate also seems to have only partial use of one kidney. We will know more when a better evaluation is made on Thursday.  This may be the poorest family we have had in a long time. We should appreciate that at this age a lot of toys as gifts will not mean as much as practical items to help the parents raising the girls. A suggestion : let's get together two international suitcases now & begin to assemble things for the return as we go along.

They will stay at the Ronald McDonald House, but Rotarians are still needed to walk them to and from the hospital, sit with them during visits, take them out for meals, etc. Please let us know if you can help by calling Sully at 568-9782.

A picture of success and happiness as the remarkably recovered beautiful young girls are presented by grateful parents to their Rotary friends.

Wednesday 12/17

Yesterday we went to the East Cooper Rotary Club during our Toys For Tots day. This generosity was almost unbelievable to Juan.Juan & Kelly were a big hit, she just works a crowd.. His thank you talk was translated by Carmen Jimenez - a tear in his eye at the end.

Today we visited the Summerville Club during their Christmas lunch. This Club has always been one of our greatest supporters and today they made this family feel truly welcome in Charleston. Jackie gave a wonderful thank you in clear, excellent english.

Monday 12/15

From Pat

Good morning - Please see two attached pictures. Sandra & Jake came to visit Kelly on Saturday & brought a wonderful meal. Many thanks, the meals are a major help to a host family. The next is Kate yesterday afternoon. Also we owe thanks to the Jimenez family for bringing a much appreciated meal to Jackie & Juan at the hospital last Thursday afternoon. All of our helpers have done an outstanding job -

" Service Above Self " at work !

This weeks schedule, please note & help as needed

Today - we have Kate moved into room 708 in 7-C in Children's Hospital. Mom moved in with her yesterday afternoon. Dad, Kelly & I will visit with them this morning. We are not yet sure how long she will be in the hospital, her eating needs to improve & she does not yet breathe on her own. Kate is her old self though- smiles & waves to everyone. Visit if you can, please.

Tuesday - I will bring Kelly & Juan to Rotary in the morning. Even if Kate is released today, tomorrow would be too soon get her up so early. Kelly is already up early looking for playmates and of course she hasn't yet met a stranger. I hope that Samantha, one of our translators, & Carmen & Juan will be able to join us. We will be taking Dad & Kelly to the hospital each day Kate is there.

Wednesday - We go up to visit Summerville Lunch Club as guests of their GOL committee. Blan Rosebrock is one of our great supporters & fundraisers. Again probably Kelly & Juan.

Thursday - This is a busy day & I especially need your help. I would like to take one of the parents & Kelly to the North Charleston Breakfast Club for a visit. Robbie Snyder has also been a stalwart supporter for years and we need to thank them for their fundraising & support.

Kelly has her first follow up visit at noon. This usually takes several hours. We hope that Kate will have been released by then. I need help today as I have some business in the afternoon & have been invited to be the guest speaker at the St. George Rotary Club Christmas party at 6:30. Pat will attend there with me & we will not be back until late that evening. We need help driving at least one parent & Kelly to MUSC for those appointments. Our Club party is that night & should the family not be too tired, I know they would enjoy a brief visit to the festivities. Mark Foster will be sure to invite the Jimenez's to the party.

Friday - As of now nothing is scheduled.

Saturday- In the afternoon the Campbell Family Christmas party is scheduled. This is an assemblage of masses of loud, laughing eaters. We will enjoy introducing Gift of Life to especially the young children. the twins are the guests of honor.

More later on - please volunteer some time to help during this busy week,  Pat

Updates

 As of 12/8 1230pm

Good afternoon - We have just received an update from the OR that Kelly is finishing up. All is well with no problems. Mom & dad are crying happy tears now. We will be able to go into the ICU to visit her in about an hour.
To use time this morning we have taken walks around the area & went to Ronald McDonald House to check in & deliver their suitcase & crib for Kate.
I will send another update after Dr. Bradley comes up to talk with us.
    Thanks to all, Pat

On Dec 5th

We had a call from MUSC just a while ago. Kelly's surgery has been moved up until Monday morning, first case. We will have them there at 5:30. We expect the operation to be over in late morning and the parents will get to see her in the ICU by early afternoon.

We will move the family to the Ronald McDonald House Rotary Room to stay until both children are moved out of intensive care into a room on 7C. The parents can then sleep in the rooms with the girls until they are released.

We need to go to the hospital on Sunday morning for admissions paperwork and to have blood workups done. The Fosters & Jimenez families will cover Mass on Saturday afternoon.

This morning the family slept in until 9 o'clock and now the girls have been fed and they & Mom are sleeping peacefully.

    Thanks, Pat & Sully

 On Dec 4th

Good evening to all - Our girls arrived on time & tired in Charleston on Wednesday evening. Sully has some great pictures. Lots of Club members in attendance as well as our friends Carmen & Juan Jiminez and their children. Attached is a picture of Kelly & Kate getting home & trying on new outfits.

We started our day at MUSC bright & early 7:45 & got back home this afternoon at 5:00 pm - long day but all testing is done. There were no surprises & typical but serious conditions of many of our children's operations. Kate's development is several months behind Kelly's but they are alert, smiling children who love to play.

The children have, as we know, severe hearing problems & Kate does have a cleft pallet. The children should probably wait awhile until these receive attention. Right now we are concentrating on the main problems to their hearts. As of now Dr.Hsai will operate on Kate on Tuesday and Dr. Bradley will do Kelly on Wednesday.

I will photoshop those " I don't know where they came from " dates on today's pictures.

Tomorrow will be a sleep in day for the family. They are totally exhausted. The Fosters & Jiminez's will attend to Mass on Sunday. Other than that no other plans yet. Probably best to not get too stressful with the surgerys so close.

Both Jacqui & Juan want to work on learning english and are very inquisitive. We are all having a great GOL experience.

Sully and Pat,

The girls appointments are at 8am on Thursday. They are not to have any food or milk after midnight on Wednesday. They can have clear liquids like apple juice, until 6am thursday morning. They are to have nothing after 6am as they will be sedated to ensure an accurate echocardiogram of their heart. Their appointment is in the same place as before, 6th Floor Children's Hospital room 602. Please let me know if you have any questions.

thank you

Robin Ohlinger MSN RN

Good morning Tom - we are attaching Robin Ohlinger's instructions for the twins first hospital appointment. We will reiterate the info to the parents when they arrive however your translation may relieve their anxiety. The first visit may take the better part of the day and the children will be able to take a bottle etc after the sedative wears off. Mom should have enough formula for the day but we will also be having someone go out to stock up on diapers & formula upon arrival.

Already we have clothes including some Christmas outfits&warm clothes for everyone at the airport.

Thanks, Sully & Pat

To All,

Kate Odileys Gomez Duran and Kelly Janeth Gomez Duran are two twin girls with Tetralogy of Fallot, from Panama, that will be arriving in the United States on Wednesday the 3rd of December and they will be seen in Peds Card clinic at 8am on thursday by Dr. Bandisode. They will need sedated echocardiograms and the Host family has been instructed on the NPO status. They will also need CXR and EKG. The girls will be accompanied by their parents Jacqeline & Juan. Good afternoon Sully And Pat:

The send off went well this morning. Again found someone to help family through the airport in Atlanta, there names in case you receive call are Phil and Geovanni. What makes it good their plane leaves from the same concourse as Jackeline and Juan.

I spoke to Jackeline about the fasting tonight, you can again emphasize the importance.

Jackeline should deliver to you the envelope as well as passports, tickets, etc.

12/1/2008

Good morning to all- This email list goes to the GOL committee & our very loyal helpers. We rely on all of you for the nuts & bolts work & you have worked miracles in the past.

Kate & Kelly Duran ( DOB 1/25/08 ) and parents Jacqeline & Juan arrive in Charleston on Wednesday December 3 at 5:11PM on Delta flight 1590 from Atlanta. Please try to be there, bring your children if possible. The first impression takes a lot of pressure off our guests.

The first doctors appointment is Thursday at 8 am. This will be a busy day of tests. No surgery dates as of now.

We still need to borrow two high chairs, possibly two cribs. Most of the GOL families sleep in the same bed with the babies but we do not know yet.

The family is Catholic, Mark & Sharon Foster and Juan & Carmen Jimenez have volunteered to bring them to church.

Do not be shy during this busy time of year. Twice the number of kids, twice the work - Get in touch with Sully or Pat - drivers for doctor visits, take the family out, participate in holiday fun, hospital visits. Lots of good stuff.
